With such a diverse and sizable student body, the range of needs is as broad as it is deep, encompassing academic support, extracurricular activities, mental health resources, and more. The chart not only highlights the sheer number of young lives we have the opportunity to positively influence but also emphasizes the importance of tailored programs to meet these varied and evolving educational needs. Our area has over 7,000 students enrolled in Pre-K through 12th grade and that brings a variety of needs and individuals to reach. Overall this accounts for about 16% of the UW of Pekin’s region’s population

“With our United Way area having roughly 17% of its residents being youth in the school system that creates quite a few challenges, especially when you factor in those additional children soon to be entering school and those in college. COVID-19, social media, the digital age have all had an impact on the way the school system operates and educates our youth and the social, emotional and educational needs of our youth. Our local school administration and faculty are doing a tremendous job of dealing with these challenges with limited resources. It’s up to the community to pitch in and help Unite resources to leverage non profit programs and help fill the gaps. These kids are the future of our community and country and we owe them every opportunity to succeed!”
In the Pekin School District, approximately 67% of students live at or below the Federal low-income guidelines, a statistic that brings to light significant challenges within our education system. This high percentage of students facing economic hardship impacts not just their academic performance, but also their access to essential educational resources and opportunities. Schools in our district are often under increased pressure to provide not only quality education but also additional support in areas such as nutrition, after-school programs, and mental health services.
The correlation between economic status and educational outcomes is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach. Students from low-income families may face barriers like limited access to learning materials, technology, and a conducive home environment for studying. Additionally, the stress of financial instability can affect their cognitive and emotional well-being, which in turn impacts their learning and school participation. Addressing these challenges is crucial for creating an equitable educational landscape where every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their economic background.

The Family School Liaison Program provides counseling services to individuals at Jefferson Primary School. Students receive knowledge in social and emotional core competencies of self regulation, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
